A different kind of gold: a fight for redemption

Born in Pereira, Colombia, to a family entangled in the cocaine trade, Diego H. Tobon crossed an ocean, walked onto a Division I soccer field in Alabama, and eventually swore an oath to become one of the very agents his family once feared. Over a 20-year career with the FBI spanning five field offices, Diego went undercover in more than 100 operations targeting international narcotics trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime - living, at times, in the same forbidden world he'd once escaped.

In this candid luncheon talk, Diego shares the story behind his memoir, A Different Kind of Gold, and the hard-won lessons of a career spent on the line: what it takes to lead with integrity when the stakes are life or death, the courage to stand firm when everyone around you won't, and how to find purpose again when the mission changes. It's a story about identity, faith, family, and the true cost - and reward - of chasing the American dream with your eyes open.

Diego H. Tobón is a retired FBI Special Agent whose career carried him from immigrant beginnings to some of the most demanding assignments in federal law enforcement, including deep undercover work, SWAT operations, and major investigations. He began his career in local policing before joining the FBI, where he served for decades alongside his wife Angie, also a retired FBI agent.
